DÉRIVE DRIFT: Uroboros Edition

The Dérive Drift is a playful short-form contest rooted in an evocative exploration of memory palaces far and near through creative spatial engagement.

The DÉRIVE DRIFT will be introduced by the authors during the festival's Lightning Talks program and continue to exist as a stand-alone event, drifting all over the internets.

While psychogeographic and Situationist approaches have typically examined the terrains of the cities we move through, in response to COVID-19 limitations we cordially invite you (and the trusted others you are isolated with!) to creatively drift through more intimate terrains with us - your spaces of care, escape, solitude, refuge, and more - and reflect on how the words we think with and shape our worlds through may be associated with the many histories that surround, enrich or oppress us. We will reward €100 to one lucky Drifter who produces the most poetic and thought-provoking work, to aid in the development of future creative rendezvous in other spaces and places.

To enter the Dérive Drift, get started here and upload your submission to the hashtag #UroborosDrift before the contest deadline of Wednesday, 27th May 2020.

Kat Braybrooke & Jaz Hee-jeong Choi

Kat Braybrooke is a spatial anthropologist and designer who combines ethnographic, co-design, geo-spatial & feminist STS approaches to explore the critical implications of collective spaces like makerspaces in museums, and creative production from making and hacking to craft. In doing so, her work asks “how can collaborative digital & material participation facilitate new forms of social-ecological transformation rooted in care?” Kat is Research Fellow on the EU Horizon 2020 project, CreaTures: Creative Practices for Transformational Futures, with the School of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Sussex, a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College London, a member of the Care-full Design Lab at RMIT, and a co-founder of the creative research lab Studio We & Us in London, UK, which combats atomisation by working with institutional spaces to foster experimental interventions in collective public participation.

Jaz Hee-jeong Choi is Director of the Care-full Design Lab and Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow, who leads RMIT on the EU Horizon 2020 project, CreaTures: Creative Practices for Transformational Futures. As a transdisciplinary researcher, her approach to urban sustainability recognises ‘play’ and ‘care’ as the core of transformational encounters in cities as complex cyberphysical networks. She builds on this to explore, often through playful and participatory engagements, how design in varying forms and scale can be done care-fully in different cultural contexts. Currently, she is exploring care-full design for liveable and equitable urban futures across three inter-related domains: self-care and mutual aid; creative and impactful research methods, and; co-creative urban transformation. Previously, she founded FoodCHI as a SIGCHI Network and a field of research and served as the Director of QUT Urban Informatics Research Lab. She has collaborated with leading international researchers and practitioners across disciplines, and given keynote presentations at major international conferences, including the 2010 UNESCO Creative Cities and 2013 Global Social Economy Forum.
